Getting Things Done PDF Print
Written by David Allen

Getting Things Done offers a complete system for downloading all those free-floating gotta-dos clogging your brain into a sophisticated framework of files and action lists--all purportedly to free your mind to focus on whatever you're working on.However, it still operates from the decidedly Western notion that if we could just get really, really organised, we could turn ourselves into 24/7 productivity machines.

Allen's approach is more whole-life as organising systems go, His system is pretty good, can even be fun and therapeutic. It starts with the exhortation to take every unaccounted-for scrap of paper in your workstation that you can't junk. The next step is to write down every unaccounted-for gotta-do cramming your head onto its own scrap of paper. Finally, throw the whole stew into a giant "in-basket". Organizing made fun and simple.

Anyway, this book is designed to make you think about about different ways and methods to get things done - which is still the goal for 90% of us. Outcomes and achievement are what set the high performers apart from the thundersing herd of also-rans. Join the rnaks of high performers and read this book.

Leadership and Self-Deception PDF Print
Written by The Arbinger Institute

Using the story/parable format so popular these days, Leadership and Self-Deception takes a novel psychological approach to leadership. It's not what you do that matters, according to the story , but why you do it.

Latching onto the latest leadership trend won't make people follow you if your motives are selfish--people can smell a rat, even one that says it's trying to empower them. The tricky thing is, we don't know that our motivation is flawed in most cases. Thus, deceiving ourselves in subtle ways of thinking that we're doing the right thing for the right reason. We really do know what the right thing to do is, but this constant self-justification becomes such an ingrained habit that it's hard to break free of it.

This is one of my favorite leadership books. It is simple to read and understand with its story format and simple thought explanations. There are many managers and leaders who fall into the self-deception trap and don't know it since they are only looking at the surface reasons of why they do things.

USe this book to open your eyes and thoughts to new or different ways to approach leadership.

In Search of Excellence PDF Print
Written by Tom Peters and Robert Waterman

This book was a survey written by a couple of McKinsey consultants that seek to define the characteristics of successful and excellent organizations using the McKinsey 7-S framework - Structure, Systems, Style, Staff, Skills, Strategy, and Shared Values.

The authors findings suggest that eight attributes are common for an excellent organization. This include a bias for action, close to the customer, autonomy and entrepreneurship, productivity through people, hands on, value driven, stick to the knitting (=focus on what you do best), simple and lean staff, and simultaneous loose-tight properties (balance between centralized/decentralized organization).

The irony of this book is several years later, Tom Peters wrote that most of the companies he wrote about in his book failed to live by the information duscyssed in the book. In fact, he went further stating that the large mulitnational companies listed in the book were not ideal clients - because they did not use the measures he found in his original research. He actually preferred the small to mid sized companies that would actually use the information he shared with them.

This is a required read for leaders who need to understand the McKinsey 7-S model and the key factors for long term growth and success.

I'm OK, You're OK PDF Print
Written by Thomas Harris

One of the first psychology management books used during the humanistic period of management. Again, this is one of the classic books on management theory - that is still valid today.

If you ever feel insecure and worry what others think about you then this is the book for you. Harris explains in simple terms the breakdown of the personality and enables you to understand what makes people the way they are.

Most people will never know the fundamentals explained in this simple book. Take advantage of the knowledge placed in this book to learn more about human behavior. His PAC model is simple and it works. Learn how thoughts impact every day people.

Getting to Yes PDF Print
Written by Roger Fischer and William Ury

A book on negotiating by two of the legends of negotiation. Only issue in my opinion it gives only surface level inofrmation or knowledge on negotiation. It gives little information regarding the reasons techniques work or the human theory behind the concepts.

Lots of stories, yet, lacks the intensive figure out how things work tyoe of story.

I believe this was a ghost written book without the background knowledge to share with the readers. If you are only looking for the basics of negotiating, then this is your book. If you are looking for more indepth knowledge on the power of negotiation then there are other books to read. One such book is Caldini's Influence or Why People Buy.

Not the best book on Negotaitioni, yet it is a best seller. Figure than one out!

How to Win Friends and Influence People PDF Print
Written by Dale Carnegie

Under the subheading "15,000,000 people can't be wrong," this is one of the all-time business book classics. You've probably heard about this book, as it's one of those titles that have become part of the cultural lexicon. It floats around the edges of the pop-culture ether, easily recalled but little read.

Written in 1936, it is based on courses in public speaking that had been taught in adult education courses by Dale Carnegie's organization since 1912. It is an interesting little book, written in a highly personalized, colloquial style that is reminiscent of a lecture or period piece.

This book was designed with professionals in mind, and designed to help professional people do better in business by helping them make social contacts and improve their speaking skills. It was also written with a certain earnestness in mind for the general population. Carnegie was a big believer in sincerity when it came to dealing with other people.

This is a classical must read book for all people not just leaders or professionals.
